A Feral Housewife

Forging her own path ahead

My Story

No girl ever wrote in her diary that she can’t wait to be married so she could be the domesticated servant of her own castle.

And yet, isn’t that how the story goes?

We fall in love. Get married. Buy a house. Have kiddos.

And the whole time, no one discusses who’s going to be scrubbing the toilets, doing the laundry, cooking dinner every night…for the REST of our lives.

I knew long before I got married that I had no desire to be a typical, domesticated housewife. I lived in Italy for 2 years and grew up with Italian-born parents. I had front row tickets to how a culture can define gender roles.

Am I sounding like a woman who hates being a housewife?

I hope not. Because I love it!

I choose to be a housewife.

I wanted to give up my career to stay home and take care of the house and children. (In my case child, my body wouldn’t let me produce more, but I’m told my 1 counts for 3 with his energy level 😜).

I’m thankful my husband has a well-paying job and that we’ve chosen to live simply, according to our standards (not what society dictates).

It’s working for us. I understand not every woman gets to make that choice. I’m sorry.

I’ve been married for 20 years now (as of 2024) and have learned a thing or two about being a housewife. And I still have a lot to learn!

Being a housewife comes with its own unique set of challenges.

Are you struggling with a dull, boring, mundane routine?

Are you feeling suffocated or trapped?

Are you worried about what others think (including family)?

Are you trying to ‘do it all’ and still don’t feel like the perfect housewife?

Do you feel taken for granted?

Do you have a good support system?

Do you make time for creativity, self-care, and fun?

Are you looking forward to marriage but cringe at the thought of being ‘just a housewife’?

Thus, the rise of the Feral Housewife!

I love words! Stories are the heart of every human. I’ve been writing since the 4th grade. I started journaling thanks to my teacher and haven’t stopped. Writing isn’t only a means of self-expression, it’s also a way to learn about yourself and the world. It’s a way to quiet the anxious mind. Writing helps me feel alive and real.
